Match material, product form, dimensions, performance and intended use with the standard’s scope. Check the current edition and whether the proposed product is eligible for JIS Mark certification. A contractual reference to a JIS test method may require testing evidence rather than a full product mark licence.

• Record the customer or regulatory reason for the requested route.

The Japanese Industrial Standards Committee explains that registered certification bodies conduct JIS Mark assessment. Confirm the body’s coverage for the particular standard and product before agreeing the project. Overseas manufacturers can use the system, but the applicant and manufacturing arrangements must be clearly identified.

• Define factories, product families and the proposed certificate holder.

Review specifications, drawings and existing test information against the selected standard. Explain how sample sizes and grades represent the requested scope. A practical product matrix should connect each commercial designation to its standard classification, dimensions and required performance, avoiding vague family descriptions that are difficult to assess.

• Control the test sample’s material and manufacturing history.

JIS Mark certification also examines the relevant quality management system. Prepare evidence showing how incoming materials, processes, inspections and nonconforming products are controlled. Walk through the manufacturing process before assessment and confirm that documented procedures match actual factory practice and the product standard’s requirements.

• Make inspection records available for representative production batches.

Approved marking needs to follow the applicable JIS Mark rules and certificate scope. Review required identifiers, standard references and relevant product classifications with the certifier. A laboratory report or JNLA laboratory accreditation does not independently authorize a manufacturer to apply the JIS Mark.

• Check packaging and sales material against the licensed products.

Monitor revisions to the product standard, changes in manufacturing and the certification body’s follow-up conditions. Plan technical reviews before changing raw materials, grades or factory locations. A certificate should remain connected to the real production system rather than treated as a permanent endorsement of an entire brand.

• Maintain a change register and certification review calendar.
