01 / THE BIG PICTURE

Understand the requirements.
See the opportunity.

MIC, Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, oversees important radio and telecommunications rules. “MIC approval” is a broad commercial expression, not the name of one universal certificate. A product can involve Radio Act requirements, Telecommunications Business Act terminal requirements, or both.

This route focuses on the overall regulatory map. A cellular gateway, for example, combines radio transmission with a public network connection, while another wireless device may involve a different combination of duties. Registered certification bodies assess equipment within their scopes; TELEC and JATE are organizations operating in this wider framework.

02 / WHERE IT APPLIES

Different products.
A shared focus on compliance.

Start with your product’s intended use and category. Here are some of the applications covered in this service.

APPLICATION 01

Cellular gateways

Coordinate radio transmission and telecommunications network interfaces.

APPLICATION 02

Network terminal equipment

Determine conformity requirements for relevant carrier connections.

APPLICATION 03

Multi-function connected products

Map each radio, interface and regional software configuration.

These are examples. The applicable route depends on your product specifications and target market.

03 / THE PATH FORWARD

From assessment
to your next market.

Move from the first assessment to a documented compliance plan, with clear responsibilities and evidence for your product.

01

Map the interfaces

Identify radio and public network functions in the finished device.

02

Assign assessment routes

Confirm legal pathways and suitable bodies for each function.

03

Coordinate technical evidence

Align model data, samples and reports across workstreams.

04

Check release conditions

Review marking, configuration control and remaining operating duties.

List every wireless transmitter and every interface connected to a telecommunications carrier’s network. Explain the intended architecture, including embedded modules, external modems and software functions. This helps identify where radio conformity and terminal equipment conformity are separate questions, even when both functions appear inside one enclosure.

  • Create an interface diagram for the Japanese configuration.

Japan’s radio framework includes technical conformity mechanisms for specified radio equipment. Registered certification bodies can assess relevant equipment or construction designs within their authorized scope. Conformity marking can support defined licensing treatments, but it should not be described as removing every possible radio station or operating requirement.

  • Confirm frequency use and the proposed operating conditions.
CHAPTER 03Assess terminal equipment obligationsJATE’s guidance explains the technical conformity role for equipment connecting to carrier networks. Wireless equipment can also…

JATE’s guidance explains the technical conformity role for equipment connecting to carrier networks. Wireless equipment can also trigger these terminal requirements. Describe how the product connects and which network functions it provides so the assessment body can determine the relevant scope instead of relying only on a generic product name.

  • Record network interfaces, protocols and supported service modes.
CHAPTER 04Coordinate evidence and samplesPrepare a shared product description while keeping the radio and terminal evidence clearly organized. Identify reports that can…

Prepare a shared product description while keeping the radio and terminal evidence clearly organized. Identify reports that can serve more than one workstream and areas needing dedicated evaluation. Common model names, firmware versions and photographs help prevent apparently conflicting applications for what should be one controlled product configuration.

  • Agree sample quantities and test access before shipment.
CHAPTER 05Review conformity identificationCheck the applicable marking and identification for each completed route with the responsible body. Keep radio and terminal…

Check the applicable marking and identification for each completed route with the responsible body. Keep radio and terminal approval details distinguishable where both apply. Packaging, manuals and electronic displays, where permitted, should use the approved information consistently and avoid implying wider coverage than the equipment received.

  • Link every displayed identifier to its supporting assessment.
CHAPTER 06Manage the full market releaseCombine the telecom plan with separate electrical safety, battery or other product requirements where relevant. Hardware,…

Combine the telecom plan with separate electrical safety, battery or other product requirements where relevant. Hardware, antennas and network firmware changes should be reviewed before sale. A practical release dossier includes a diagram of the assessed configuration, approval evidence and a record of any remaining deployment conditions.

  • Give distributors clear configuration and operating limitations.

Requirements vary by product, intended use and market. Confirm the applicable standards and current regulatory route before proceeding.

05 / A LITTLE MORE CLARITY

Your questions.
Our starting points.

Practical answers to common questions about Japan MIC Approval.

01Is there one MIC certificate for all connected products?

No. The product’s functions determine the relevant radio and terminal conformity routes.

02How does this differ from TELEC certification?

MIC describes the regulatory context; TELEC is one body offering assessment services within that context.

03Can a wireless product need terminal assessment too?

Yes. Public telecommunications network functions may create additional terminal requirements.

04Does technical conformity always remove licensing obligations?

No. Check the equipment category, operating conditions and any relevant station or deployment requirements.
