01 / THE BIG PICTURE

Understand the requirements.
See the opportunity.

Ecodesign now extends beyond electricity consumption. The Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation, or ESPR, creates a framework for requirements across a much wider range of physical goods, with defined exclusions. Its aims include longer product life, better material recovery and more useful information throughout the supply chain.

The framework does not impose an identical test or digital passport on every product immediately. Detailed obligations depend on the relevant product or horizontal measure and its application date. The first task is therefore to distinguish enacted requirements affecting a product from proposals and future work-plan priorities.

02 / WHERE IT APPLIES

Different products.
A shared focus on compliance.

Start with your product’s intended use and category. Here are some of the applications covered in this service.

APPLICATION 01

Energy-related equipment

Maintain current product measures while tracking the wider framework.

APPLICATION 02

Textiles and consumer goods

Prepare material and durability data for relevant developing measures.

APPLICATION 03

Industrial materials

Organise composition and lifecycle evidence for future applicable rules.

These are examples. The applicable route depends on your product specifications and target market.

03 / THE PATH FORWARD

From assessment
to your next market.

Move from the first assessment to a documented compliance plan, with clear responsibilities and evidence for your product.

01

Establish status

Separate current, future adopted and proposed measures.

02

Map evidence

Connect product attributes to reliable data sources.

03

Plan design actions

Prioritise changes against applicable requirements.

04

Maintain readiness

Review measures and controlled product information.

Build an applicability record containing the product description, destination, current legal measure and relevant dates. For energy-related products, retain the existing ecodesign assessment where applicable under transitional arrangements. For newly prioritised goods, identify which requirements have actually been adopted before creating a compliance claim.

  • Label each tracked measure as applicable, future adopted or proposed.

Potential ecodesign requirements address durability, repairability, resource use and other lifecycle characteristics. Translate the applicable measure into design questions your engineers can answer. A repairability assessment may need disassembly and spare-part information, while material circularity requires a different evidence chain.

  • Avoid presenting a sustainability rating as regulatory approval.
CHAPTER 03Prepare trustworthy product dataCreate a controlled record for materials, manufacturing inputs, component identities and claimed performance. Record the origin…

Create a controlled record for materials, manufacturing inputs, component identities and claimed performance. Record the origin and limitations of each data item. Supplier estimates, measured values and verified declarations should remain distinguishable so later reporting does not turn an assumption into an apparently established fact.

  • Assign ownership for collecting and updating supplier evidence.
CHAPTER 04Scope digital product passport readinessThe digital product passport is part of ESPR’s information framework. The required data and implementation depend on the relevant…

The digital product passport is part of ESPR’s information framework. The required data and implementation depend on the relevant measure. Start by mapping identifiers and data owners; do not buy or publish a passport on the assumption that a generic QR code alone demonstrates compliance.

  • Keep public information separate from access-controlled business data.
CHAPTER 05Review operations beyond the product designESPR also contains provisions concerning unsold consumer products, including disclosure and restrictions on destruction in…

ESPR also contains provisions concerning unsold consumer products, including disclosure and restrictions on destruction in defined circumstances. These require a separate review of business size, product scope, dates and exemptions. Inventory and returns teams may hold the relevant information rather than the design department.

  • Maintain traceable records of unsold-product handling decisions.
CHAPTER 06Use a staged implementation roadmapPrioritise actions against the product’s actual legal timetable. Resolve current compliance gaps first, then prepare data and…

Prioritise actions against the product’s actual legal timetable. Resolve current compliance gaps first, then prepare data and design changes for adopted future requirements. Keep speculative development options separate from release decisions so teams can invest in useful capabilities without claiming that unpublished rules already apply.

  • Review the roadmap when a final measure or amendment is published.

Requirements vary by product, intended use and market. Confirm the applicable standards and current regulatory route before proceeding.

05 / A LITTLE MORE CLARITY

Your questions.
Our starting points.

Practical answers to common questions about Ecodesign Compliance.

01Does ESPR require a passport for every product today?

No. Product-specific or horizontal measures determine detailed requirements and when they apply.

02Is ecodesign the same as an ecolabel?

No. Regulatory ecodesign requirements and voluntary environmental labels are different systems.

03Are existing appliance rules still relevant?

Yes. Product measures and transitional provisions remain important for energy-related equipment.

04Can work-plan priorities be treated as final requirements?

No. A priority identifies intended regulatory work; the final adopted measure determines the enforceable obligations.
